When I'm my birth mother left me in the hospital she didn't leave any details of me not even a name.
My name is Chantal Doecke and I was adopted through the “Operation babylift” that saw 3,000 babies and children adopted all over the world. There were approximately 300 of us that came to Australia. My story began during the mayhem of evacuating the Vietnamese people to safety. I was born at the Tu Du Maternity hospital that is located in Saigon dist 1. Unfortunately I have very limited information associated with my birth, I have been told that once my mother had given birth to me she had left the hospital leaving me behind. I guess under the circumstances she knew that it would quite difficult to flee with such a premature baby. Operation Babylift were considered mercy flights to rescue as many children as they could and take them to away from Vietnam. I believe that the day of my departure I was 1 of three baby girls at the hospital, it has been suggested that a phone call had been made to the hospital asking if there were any children that had been abandoned as they were about to set off to Australia. I was the only baby girl from there to be taken en route to Tan Son Nhut airport. There were no official documents surrounding my birth, only to say that they thought that I would not survive the flight as I was quite premature with a heart condition. I arrived into Sydney airport on the 5th of April, 1975, where all the children remained for a few days for health quarantine checks before we then sent onto our new adoptive families. I have always been told that it would be impossible to find out anything about my biological parents, I have myself now wanting to find any information on them or if there is somebody that may recognise my story.
