“Davis Camp” war veterans meet
War veterans who once served in the Joint Military Group at Davis Camp held a get-together in Hanoi on April. 28 to recall the days when they were involved in the diplomatic struggle amid the enemy’s den demanding the US side observe the Paris Accord and withdraw troops from South Vietnam.

The get-together took place on the occasion of the Party and State conferring the title of Hero of the People’s Armed Forces to the two military missions of the Provisional Revolutionary Government of the Republic of South Vietnam and the Democratic Republic of Vietnam, which were stationed at “Davis Camp” after the Paris Accord was signed.

Colonel Nguyen Van Kha, Head of the Liaison Committee of the “Davis Camp” Joint Military Group, said that Davis Camp used to be a unit of the US air force located southwest of the Tan Son Nhat Airport . It was named by the US to commemorate the first soldier who died in battle in South Vietnam , James Thomas Davis.

He said that the use of the military camp as the headquarters for the two Vietnamese military missions showed the opponent’s intention to isolate the Vietnamese soldiers and prevent Saigon people from contacting them.

However, during the 823-day-and-night military-diplomatic struggle amid the enemy’s den, the Vietnamese soldiers brought into full play their patriotic spirit, courage, ingenuity and activeness, helping bring about a complete victory of national reunification, he stressed.

At the get-together, the war veteran emphasized the need to establish a “Davis Camp” museum which aims to educate young people on the glorious traditions of the previous generations.

On the occasion, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs presented the insignia to 34 war veterans who served at “Davis Camp”.
