POLICE will step up the search for an elderly man with dementia who they believe wandered from his home in Tingalpa overnight Friday.

Seventy-six-year-old father Marian Ksiazek went missing from his house, where he lives alone, in Samarinda St, Tingalpa, sometime between 3am and 7am Saturday morning and has not been seen since.

Family members and police hold grave concerns for his welfare because he has communication difficulties and may not approach people if he is lost.

Metro South regional search and rescue co-ordinator Senior Constable Justin Dunn said police doorknocked locals and businesses today, while 20 SES volunteers scoured the bushland behind Mr Ksiazek's home.

"We're very concerned for his safety because this is out of character ... so, tomorrow, we're going to intensify the search with more volunteers and expanding the search area," he said.

He urged residents in the Tingalpa and Wynnum area to "check your backyards".

Mr Ksiazek is Caucasian, of a medium build, 167cm tall with brown eyes and is bald.

Police are appealing to any members of the public that may have seen Mr Kziazek to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 immediately.
