'Sisterhood' came into play recently when a special childhood friendship grew into two girls becoming "Big" and "Little" Sisters in the Epsilon Chapter of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority at the University of Kentucky.
These girls are Laura Hanks, 18, a 2002 graduate of Logan County High School, and Sarah Webb, 19, a 2001 graduate of Boyle County High School in Danville.
Webb and her family lived in Auburn while her father, Dick Webb, was head basketball coach at Logan County High School and her mom, Kim Webb, worked as a dental assistant for Dr. Paul Kerr in Russellville.
The Webb family later moved to Danville for Dick Webb to take a position as principal. This move took place when Sarah and Laura were in the third and fourth grades at Auburn Elementary School.
The girls' friendship goes back as far as the girls taking dance classes together and performing in Pearce Memorial United Methodist Church in Auburn and were in the same Sunday School class and many church plays.
The girls traveled with each other's families on summer vacations and were in the same Brownie troop and made numerous "shopping trips" together. However, the Webb family's move to Danville did not leave distance between the girls, as they continued to stay in touch. Many trips were made by both the Hankses and Webbs to meet in Elizabethtown to "trade girls" for weekend visits.
Now, Laura and Sarah are both students at the University of Kentucky and are sharing a special 'sisterhood.' They have been attending UK football games together and getting together every chance they get, including Monday nights at the AGD Sorority House for dinner and a meeting.
Laura is a freshman majoring in Agricultural Economics and Sarah is a sophomore majoring in Communications.
According to the girls, no one could have a better "Big" or "Little" Sis. When the announcement was made of who had been matched at "Big" and "Little" sisters, Kim Webb phoned Jana Hanks to share the news of their daughters' new sisterhood.
While the mothers were rejoicing in their daughters' new sisterhood, another call was coming in from the girls to share in the excitement. It is definitely a match made for these long-time friends, as they are friend for life.
The official Initiation Day for the AGD Sorority was held on Nov. 10 at the Hyatt Regency in Lexington. Hanks received one of three awards given at the ceremony. She received the AGD "Most Spirit" award.
Also sharing in the friendship of these two girls are their parents, Charles Kelley and Jana Hanks, Auburn and Dick and Kim Webb, Danville.
