In the evening of October 3rd, 1973, enemy reconnaissance planes spotted troops from Regiment 207 crossing Vam Co Tay to Da Bien hamlet, Moc Hoa district (now in Thanh Hoa district, Long An province). Immediately, the enemy sent 12 helicopters with troops to raid the locality, aiming to capture the regiment commander.
Troops, mostly from Battalion 1, quickly deployed a formation to bravely fight against the enemy for a full day. Amid the raid, more than 200 troops died in the unequal battle.
12 days after the raid, a reconnaissance company and local forces entered Da Bien to collect the bodies for burial in the region.
In 1989, local people found the martyrs’ sets of remains while reclaiming land for farming, and reburied them and built a shrine to worship the martyrs. Learning about the moving story, in early 2012, ViettinBank granted VND 5 billion to build a martyrs’ memorial.
The memorial, completed after five months’ construction, was recognized as a provincial cultural relic
