War ordnance found underneath Central Vietnam home
The Lam Dong Province Army Corps of Engineers discovered one ton of unexploded war ordnance under a house in the town of Bao Loc Wednesday.

The landmines and grenades had been found a day earlier by construction workers digging to build the foundation of a house.

A military engineer said the place may have been used to store armaments by the US-backed Saigon-based regime during the Vietnam War.

The Corps estimates that around 6.6 million hectares, or 21 percent of the country’s land area, are contaminated with 800,000 tons of unexploded ordinance (UXO) leftover from the war.

Committee 504, the national agency assigned to deal with UXO, said the US Army used more than 15 million tons of bombs, landmines, and other explosive materials on Vietnam during the war that ended in 1975.
